The Windham Bomber Athletic Hall of Fame honors former athletes who achieved excellence through competition, coaches who have made a difference
in the lives of their athletes and supporters of the athletic program.

dave aDavid Apthorpe lettered in all three sports. He was on the baketball team that went to the State tournament in 1976. He was 2nd Team All PCL his Sophomore year, 1st Team All PCL his Junior and Senior years. Dave was 1st Team All PCL for Baseball in 1978. Dave attended Northwestern Business College and within a month Dave had proven himself as a walk-on to the basketball team and received a full scholarship for the next two years. He broke some school records - one being most points scored in a game (43) when there were no 3 point shots. After receiving his Associate Degree in Business Administration he attended Hiram College for one year, also playing basketball and receiving honors. He started coaching High School Junior Varsity Girls' Basketball the 1983-84 season. Dave moved up to coach the Varsity Girls' Basketball Team the 1984-85 season. From 1986 through 1992 he coached the Junior High School 8th Grade Girls' Basketball Team and for one year, 1991-92, Dave coached the Junior High School 7th Grade Boys' Basketball Team. He has built a very strong girls' basketball program and volunteers his time on Saturdays with the 5th and 6th grade basketball program along with various fundraisers which earned the basketball team enough money for new basketball uniforms for the 1995-96 season. Dave received the Coach of the Year Award from the Akron Touchdown Club the 1994-95 season after taking the girls to the Regional semi-finals.




joe fJoe Fabry.........Freshman Year Varsity Football - 1st year letterman Freshman Year Varsity Basketball - 2nd Team All PCL, Akron Beacon Journal All PCL Honorable Mention, averaged 10.6 points and 6 rebounds per game. Sophomore Year Varsity Football - 2nd Team All PCL Defensive, 2nd Year Varsity Letterman. Sophomore Year Varsity Basketball - 1st Team All PCL, Associated Press All Ohio 3rd Team, Associated Press Akron Beacon Journal Ohio Northeastern All Star 1st Team, Akron Beacon Journal All District 2nd Team, United Press International Class "A" All Ohio Honorable Mention, averaged 17.2 points and 11 rebounds per game. Junior Year Varsity Football - 3rd Year Varsity Letterman. Junior Year Varsity Basketball - All PCL Headliner 1st Team, Associated Press Northeastern Ohio All Star 1st Team, Associated Press Class "A" All Ohio Trumbull Area Special Mention, United Press International Class "A" All Ohio 2nd Team, Akron Beacon Journal All District 1st Team, an undefeated regular season and averaged 18.2 points and 12 rebounds per game. Senior Year Varsity Football - 4th year Varsity Letterman, All PCL 2nd Team Defense. Senior Year Varsity Basketball - Akron Beacon Journal Male Athlete of the Week (scoring 66 points, 32 rebounds in two PCL games), Associated Press Northeastern All District Player of the Year, Associated Press All Ohio Class "A" 1st Team, United Press International All Ohio Class "A" 1st Team, 1st Choice All PCL All Stars, selected for the Hoyle Basketball Tournament in Sharon, PA, North-South All Star Cage Classic (chosen by Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association), Akron Beacon Journal All District 1st Team, Associated Press USA TODAY Honorable Mention, averaged 24.2 points and 16.8 rebounds per game. Career Accomplishments - Three times 1st Team All PCL, Three PCL Championship Teams, 36-0 regular season PCL wins spanning two seasons, 1731 total points scored in four seasons, averaged 17.8 points per game. After graduation Joe attended Baldwin Wallace University where he played basketball his freshman year. He graduated from college with a degree in Sports Management and a minor in Business.


bob gRobert Garrett had a total of fifteen varsity letters in his four years of high school. He had four varsity letters in football, three varsity letters in basketball, four varsity letters in baseball and four varsity letters in track. He was three years All County Football, two years All County Basketball, and a member of the All Star Baseball Team. In track he came in 2nd place in the 100 yard dash twice and was 2nd place in the 440 yard dash. Robert pitched two "twenty strikeout" games for the baseball team. After high school Robert was on the Pittsburgh Pirates Farm Club in 1948. In 1952 and 1953 he was on the Clark Air Force Base Traveling Baseball Team.

 

 

 


rob gRob Garrett enjoyed an outstanding high school athletic career. In football he was voted 1st Team All Ohio in both the Associated Press and U.P.I. polls for the 1974-75 season, 1st Team All PCL Tight End and 1st Team All Northeastern Ohio Tight End as well as 1st All PCL pick by the Akron Beacon Journal and 2nd Team "Dream Team" Akron Beacon Journal. Rob was a starter on three PCL Championship Basketball Teams which went on to District and Regional Competition. He took 2nd place in the discus PCL Meet in 1974. Rob also played one year of Golf. Rob played Hot Stove baseball from the time he was nine years old. He was a starter for the State Championship Runner-Up Team of 1967 and a starter on the State Championship "F" League Team of 1970. Rob earned a total of 10 varsity letters during his high school years. After high school Rob was awarded a football scholarship from the University of Akron. Rob has volunteered many hours to help the Windham Football Program and enjoyed working as an Assistant Varsity Football coach for five years until work and family obligations made it necessary for him to revert to volunteering what time he could. He has also coached Little League Baseball teams for the past fifteen years and has been a very positive influence on Windham's young people.




melissa vMelissa Viebranz......Freshman Year - Melissa played Volleyball, Track and Basketball. She averaged 46% free throws and 7.4 points per basketball game. Sophomore Year - Melissa played Softball and Volleyball. She was 2nd Team All PCL in Basketball, scoring 148 points, and was the second leading scorer on the District Runner-Up Team. Junior Year - Melissa was Honorable Mention All PCL and Best Offensive Player in Volleyball. In Basketball she was 1st Team All PCL, placed 3rd in voting in PCL, Windham's MVP, led team in points (250), assists (64), rebounds (90), and steals. Melissa, as Captain, and her team advanced to the District Finals. Melissa was the Softball team's pitcher and infield player, the RBI leader, and led the team in pitching wins and strikeouts. Senior Year - Melissa was Honorable Mention All PCL in Volleyball. As Co-Captain in Basketball, Melissa was 1st Team All PCL, placed 2nd in the voting, 2nd time Akron Beacon Journal Honor Roll, Player of the Week with Windham vs. Garfield having 22 points, 11 rebounds, 9 steals and 6 assists. Melissa was one of two girls selected to play in the MahoningTrumbull-Columbiana All Star annual game. She was also selected to play in the Portage QuadCounty Girls All Star Basketball game. Melissa totaled 313 points, 138 rebounds, 80 assists, 109 steals and had 70% free throw average. The team advanced to Regional Finals and was rated #10 in the State in the final UPI poll. Melissa had four varsity letters in Volleyball, four varsity letters in Basketball and three varsity letters in Softball. She received a $500 Athletic Aid to play at Ohio Northern. She graduated from Kent State University with a BA in Business Administration. Melissa also graduated in 1995 from Akron University School of Law, JD and received her masters degree in Taxation in 1996.


jim bJim Burner was Assistant Athletic Director for Windham High School from 1975 through 1979 and was Athletic Director from 1992-2001 Jim was the Windham Assistant Varsity Football Coach during the 1966-74 seasons. He was the Assistant Junior Varsity Boys' Basketball Coach for the 1980-91 seasons and was Windham's Head Football Coach 1982-85.
